Since 2009 I've built many different types of Cajón Box-Drums for personal and professional use, for kindergartens and schools, home and stage, and as props for theatre groups. I've collaborated with artists such as Wellington based Kelly Spencer and Sean Duffel, Auckland based Shane Hansen, and have built custom made drums for the NZSO and Java Dance who have taken these creations around the world and back. I've showcased my instruments at Australasia's largest festivals including the Woodford Folk Festival, Byron Bay Bluesfest, Splendour in the Grass, and the Auckland Drum Festival.
I believe in using the highest quality materials available, searching for ethical and appropriate sustainable sources for these materials, and skilfully crafting them into beautiful musical instruments. I like to keep in contact with my clients, helping them to make the most out of their instrument, be it tuning and maintenance, learning how to play, or how to make their own.
‘Tukituki’ comes from the name of the river and the road on which my family’s farm was situated in 2009 and for three generations before that. That is where I learned to work with timber, firstly with my grandfather, and later on my own while he watched on from the farmhouse. The first Cajón came out of his workshop, along with flutes, didgeridoos and a yurt! I carry the name Tukituki with pride, it reminds me of my roots, where i first played with timber, nails and a hammer, and where my family comes from.
I remember my childhood neighbour, Pat Ward, a renowned Violin maker/repairer in Havelock North, Hawke’s Bay, and how he would spend so much time over small details in order to make instruments sing. Nowadays it is that focus, experience and care that I strive for with my instrument making.
Feel free to get in touch about what you would like me to build. I'm open to new and interesting ideas.
