Korg microKORG 2 37-key Virtual Analog Synth/Vocoder Metallic Black

Back in 2002, Korg debuted the original microKORG, a unit inspired by the prior MS2000. The former quickly emerged as a cult classic, thanks to its flexible analog-modeling engine, mobility-minded form factor, detailed controls, and, of course, the vocoder. While several siblings have spawned in the ensuing 20-plus years, the wait for a proper successor is finally over with the next-gen incarnation of the microKORG virtual analog synthesizer and vocoder. This latest iteration of the microKORG has thoroughly impressed synthesists and sound designers around the globe, with its ability to intricately weave future-facing appointments with the iconic stylings of its predecessor, armed with hundreds of presets, assignable macros, and a multimode engine brimming with cutting-edge vocal and synthesis processing power. Did we mention that just six AA batteries make this 37-mini-key machine entirely portable? We’re just getting started.

Same origins, voltaic new vocoder possibilities

Thanks to its state-of-the-art Analog Modeling Synthesis System, this microKORG redux massively expands the vocal processing power of its early-aughts debut to stake out electrifying vocoding capabilities for the modern musical landscape, and beyond. In addition to the classic robotic textures of the original, this revamped microKORG boasts two additional dimensions of vocoder-fueled sonics: Hard Tune and Harmonizer. As their names suggest, Hard Tune utilizes a precise pitch-adjustment structure for laser-focused tuning, from note to note. Meanwhile, the Harmonizer lets you layer pitch-shifted vocals from your original delivery with up to four voices of electro-synth harmony. Should you feel extra ambitious, you can even use Hard Tune and Harmonizer simultaneously. Plus, the included gooseneck mic lets you get straight to work as soon as your microKORG hits your doorstep, but rear-mounted 1/4-inch TS and 3.5-millimeter TRS jacks accommodate use with any compatible microphone.

Time-bending sonics with a cutting-edge synth engine

It should come as no surprise that, 20 years after the original instrument’s release, this iteration of the microKORG is powered by an electrifying Virtual Analog synth engine, and this miniature menagerie of musical magic is firing on all cylinders. Classic presets return, they are however greatly expanded in terms of style and quantity, totaling 256 genre-defying options that are uniquely distributed across two layers of distinction. Each of its eight genre categories features three levels of variation: Classic, Modern, and Future. Moreover, the Virtual Analog architecture means that not only can you engage in a far deeper degree of sound shaping, thanks to a lack of any physical limitations to the arrangements of virtual circuitry, but a slew of next-level virtual patching possibilities drastically extend modulation and expression.

Extended composition with Loop Recorder and more

Immediately distinguishing this microKORG from its forefather is the central LCD that offers full-color, detailed control over the innovative new Loop Recorder, as well as the multimode arpeggiator. Its straightforward controls make it easier and more accessible than ever to build loops, harmonies, workshop ideas, and craft complete multi-part performances. Long-pressing buttons will open further editing capabilities for recording and playback, but you’ll want to explore the arpeggiator before you get there. Armed with 10 styles and per-step editing functionality, complex and evolving rhythms with your preferred patches can seamlessly integrate into a comprehensive sonic showcase that seizes the sum of all synth potential residing within this micro menace.

Iconic stylings, reimagined in form and function

One of the many facets of the original microKORG that made it such a hit with musicians was its straightforward and intuitive layout, striking the ideal balance between dept hand tactility that encouraged exploration without the risk of getting bogged down by tedious menu-diving. With this next-gen take on the microKORG, this time-tested arrangement has been updated with a full-color LCD to minimize visual clutter while supplying depth and detail to the reimagined quintet of customizable macros, managing the Loop Recorder, as well as accessing and editing any of the masterfully crafted effects and presets. Furthermore, this elegant redesign retains all the visual language of its predecessor, including the now-iconic large knob for selecting programs. In contrast, the increased overall contrast in its visual aesthetics is complemented by backlit buttons to instantly convey critical tone-crafting information, sans distractions.

Texture, tone, and complete connectivity

For all the synthesis stylings afforded by the new Virtual Analog engine, Korg’s spared no effort in deploying its capabilities across a wealth of onboard FX and timbre-shaping tools that drastically expands this microKORG’s suite of sonic texturization. Delays, reverbs, and a 2-band parametric EQ are complemented by nine vectors of modulation and a versatile set of six virtual patching modes, all of which can be adjusted and activated individually in a customizable arrangement. An onboard mixer is accompanied by dual LFOs, amp- and filter-specific envelope generators, and detailed management of Global, Split, and Layered sonics, ensuring tone-crafting goes as deep as you need it, but is never short on character. Comprehensive connectivity options include a 5-pin DIN MIDI I/O, an auxiliary input, and two microphone inputs, while a MIDI-capable USB-C port and Damper/Switch jack provide an additional layer of interoperative power to make sure your microKORG is equipped to serve any role in your sonic setup.

Features:

Reimagined design massively expands the microKORG’s sonic possibilities from its predecessor to meet the needs of modern style and composition without sacrificing its iconic character

Revamped Virtual Analog synth engine ensures versatile synth sounds, vocoder tools, and onboard FX are produced with blazing fidelity and equally detailed editing control

256 onboard presets span eight genre-based categories with sub-variants for Classic, Modern, Future, and User styles to streamline sound design while reducing guesswork

Vocoder now features Hard Tune and Harmonizer modes that expand vocoding possibilities with a powerful vocal processor not found in its predecessor

Included gooseneck condenser microphone lets you immediately introduce voltaic vocoding to your workflow

37 velocity-sensitive mini keys mean satisfying tactility with uncompromising portability, including 4-hour operation time with six AA batteries (not included)

Maximum 8-voice polyphony and optional Layer/Split modes bolster stage and studio performances with extensive tone-crating potential

Massively augmented FX suite includes multitudes of EQ, modulation, delay, and reverb tools with customizable arrangements for tailored, expressive sounds

Full-color 2.8-inch IPS LCD drastically reduces visual clutter while supplying relevant, detailed information for editing presets, effects, virtual patching, and more

Loop Recorder and 10-mode arpeggiator mean full-suite composition, ideation, and performance are never more than a few button-clicks away

Dual microphone inputs accommodate both condenser and dynamic miking, with 3.5mm TRS and 1/4-inch TS jacks, respectively

Versatile connectivity comprises a 1/4-inch stereo output pair, 1/4-inch headphone output, 1/4-inch Damper/Switch jack, 5-pin MIDI I/O, and MIDI-capable USB-C port
